Toutle River Valley, Washington, 2016

Patience often pays off when photographing the natural world. As long as the sun is still in the sky (and it's not entirely overcast), there is always hope that clear skies will open up on the horizon and shine that golden light on the landscape in front of you.

A few years back, I was photographing near the Johnston Ridge Observatory at Mt. Saint Helens, Washington. I was about to quit for the night when the skies cleared momentarily, just enough to shine the beautiful light in the Toutle River valley below.

After sitting in my photo archives for several years, undeveloped, I just recently rediscovered and processed this beautiful image.
