East of the Cascade Mountains, the Pacific Northwest opens into a different landscape. Forests give way to dry grasslands, sagebrush, basalt cliffs, and wide valleys. I've spent many days exploring these places, from the Columbia Basin and Grand Coulee to the Yakima River Canyon and smaller, less-traveled areas of eastern Washington.
Some photographs show the broad shapes of the land, including cliffs and coulees formed by ancient floods and volcanic activity. Others focus on smaller details, such as a weathered tree, a patch of grass, or the way shadows move across the ground.
This gallery brings together my black-and-white photographs of the region's dry landscapes, including shrub-steppe, river canyons, rock formations, and seasonal changes. I invite you to explore the collection and find a photograph that speaks to you.
I enjoy returning to these open landscapes in different seasons. The same coulee or stretch of river can look entirely different under winter snow, summer light, or a passing storm. With fewer trees to interrupt the view, changes in the sky and light often become an important part of the photograph.
